Britain on Major Flood Alert

Large areas of England and Wales could be hit by two months of rain in just one day as forecasters have predicted further storms.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for the whole of England and Wales for Friday and Saturday. Central and eastern parts of England face the worst of the weather where up to 100mm (four inches) could fall in a short period. Other areas at risk include the South West and parts of Wales and the eastern part of Ireland, where there could be up to 50mm (two inches) of rain.

Keith Groves, Head of Forecasting at the Met Office, said: “We are talking about a major rainfall event. When you get such heavy rainfall in such a short time then there is a greater risk of flooding. Areas such as Birmingham, the M5/M4 corridor and the Cotswolds are at the greatest risk of the most rain., but anywhere in England and Wales could see torrential downpours at some stage tomorrow and people should keep an eye on our forecasts.”

CWU LTB661/07 issued this week, warns Branches to be aware of the potential risks of flash flooding, which has already hit parts of Yorkshire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire and caused flooding a several Royal Mail Offices with major Flooding of the Sheffield Mail Centre.

Everyone should stay fully aware of the weather situation and where there is the danger of rivers rising people should check for flood warnings in their area.
