Social Networking Site For Trade Unionists Launches

Unionbook logoLabourStart is pleased to announce the launch this week  of UnionBook - the social networking website for trade unionists.

UnionBook is a project of LabourStart, the news and campaigning website of the international trade union movement.

UnionBook is the social networking site for trade unionists.  Unlike other social networks such as MySpace, FaceBook and Bebo, UnionBook is advertising-free, respects your privacy and is specifically designed to serve the trade union movement.  Use it to meet up with friends online, post comments to discussion forums, create a blog, upload photos and so on.

It's not designed to compete with Facebook and Myspace directly, but to provide similar services in a more targeted way for activists.

Editor of Labourstart, Eric Lee, says in his email to Labourstart subscribers:

“We know that UnionBook will never be as big as the giant commercial networks like Facebook, but once we have several thousand trade unionists using it, I'm confident that it will become a powerful tool for our movement worldwide.

We're not telling anyone to stop using other social networks. If you are active in Facebook or any of the others, that's fine. But use UnionBook for your trade union activities and see how easy it is to build and form groups, and to publish content online.”

Once you've signed up, you will receive an email which you must respond to in order to confirm your email address and activate your account.  The email message may wind up in your junk mail folder - please keep an eye out for it.

Website editor, Chris Ingram urges all readers of this site to join up asap.

Having started Group entitled, Unionsafety on Unionbook, Chris believes that it can be a place for discussion and exchange of information in addition to the website:

" We need to use all oportunities and vehcle by which to promote good health and safety practice, increase the interst in health and safety and keep ourselves informed of the the issues. It is also jey that an exhcange of dieas and expereicnes takes palce with as many USRs as possible and this is juts one way fo doing so."

He added, " I am hopeful that all of the NW BTU Co-ord will sign up and that we will see an increase in communications between the Co-ord themselves and members of the wider trade union movement intersted in health and safety. But to use this as a way of progressing health and safety amongst the massess would be a great aim!"

You can join Unionbook social networking site here and then go to Groups at bottom of the page.
