Healthy Workplaces Campaign 2010

Safe and regular maintenance is crucial in order to avoid injury, death and disasters. The lack of this is implicated in such disasters as Piper Alpha and more recently the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. In the telecoms industry safe maintenance procedures are paramount for the safety of both workers and members of the public. The Healthy Workplaces Campaign on Safe Maintenance is an integral part of ensuring a culture in the industry that has this issue as its main focus.

The NW BTU Health & Safety Co-ord fully supports the European Campaign On Safe Maintenance.

It is estimated that 10-15% of fatal accidents at work and 15 – 20% of all accidents are related to maintenance.

The Healthy Workplaces Campaign 2010-2011, is co-ordinated by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work and its partners in the 27 EU Member States and beyond. It supports a wide range of activities at the national and European level that promote safe maintenance. It is backed by the EU Presidencies of Spain and Belgium in 2010 and of Hungary and Poland in 2011, by the European Parliament and the European Commission, and by the European Social Partners.

Over the two years of the campaign, many events and activities will be organised within the Member States. One of the principal activities to support the campaign is the European Good Practice Awards that is organised specifically to identify examples of good practice related to safe maintenance.

Other campaign highlights include the two European Weeks for Safety and Health at Work, in October 2010 and October 2011. The European Safety and Health Weeks, which have been running since 2000, are annual events that promote improved safety and health in the workplace.

On these pages you will find campaign information as well as details of our forthcoming events this year that will be run in order to promote the campaign.

The co-ords major event this year will take place during its Annual European Week of Health And Safety USR Seminar with safe Maintenance being the key issue covered by the seminar.

In the meantime the documents illustrated can all be downloaded from our E-Library Database which contains over 350 documents many dealing with safe maintenance in several working environments that CWU members in telecoms, postal and financial services find themselves involved in on a daily basis.
