This article was originally entitled, "Leaving The EU Will Result In Loss Of Employment Rights, Work Breaks, Holidays And H&S Protection" and first published in 2013. Today, 2017 and 3 days before a snap general election; it remains as relevant to the situation Union Safety Reps and the people of the UK found themselves in during 2013 - and even more so!
As with the EU referendum, this year's general election campaign by the Tories has been built on lies, distortions of facts, character assassination of Jeremy Corbyn and on blatant media bias spewing out even more lies.
So we make no apology for revamping slightly, in terms of replacing the words 'Brexit' with 'Torexit' as we identify as in 2013, the reason's why it is imperative that the Tories do not get their way and end up with a majority in Parliament.
The debate over who is in government continues with the British people being in the main unaware of what it would actually mean for workers rights in terms of employment law and health and safety protection, or any knowledge of the laws that will be forced upon us by Theresa May's government if we don't vote for 'Torexit' and vote her and her evil party out of government.
The TUC have confirmed this when it issued its statement on Europe prior to the 'Brexit' vote:
"Social Europe has provided working people with more equality, more protection from redundancy, more information about what's happening at their workplace, as well as a shorter working week and paid holidays. The government wants to take that away from working people, and make them work longer hours for less pay."
Commenting at the time, Chris Ingram, Unionsafety website editor said:
"When many Trade Unionists were saying in 2010 that the true intention of the Coalition was to remove all employment rights, including health and safety legislation; and that pulling out of Europe would be their main enabler to reach their goals; the vast majority of people accused us of being extreme and of scaremongering."
Two years later he added:
"It is not surprising that now in 2017, many commentators agree with the view expressed in the headlines of this updated article. The view of many within the Trade Union movement and the health and safety community is that;
the real aim of the Tory government goes even further than the TUC statement above.
All of these principled issues of course are what created the need for the Trade Union movement, without which such basic rights implicit in regulations concerned with these provisions in the workplace would have been won.
The TUC statement on Europe at the time, made it clear of course that they, at least, are not fooled by David Cameron's rhetoric:
"The TUC executive committee believes that the government's call to repatriate powers from the European Union is a smokescreen for plans to launch further attacks on ordinary people's employment rights and could put thousands of jobs at risk.", the statement said.
The TUC statement went further:
"First, the Government wants to take away the rights working people have gained over the last thirty years from the European Union.
Second, the Prime Minister is playing politics with Britain's future prosperity to appease the Eurosceptics. His dithering about a referendum is deeply damaging to Britain's economic interests, threatening our trade relationships and creating uncertainty which is harming investment prospects, especially in manufacturing."
The TUC concluded by criticising the one thing that David Cameron, the then Prime Minister did agree with the European Union on:
"The one area where the government goes along with the rest of Europe's governments is in the self-defeating policy of austerity, which has brought poverty and misery to millions around Europe and here in Britain. It should instead be devoting its efforts to promoting growth and jobs, calling on the European Union to listen to the evidence from the IMF and OECD and change course on austerity."
Today in 2017 and with only a couple of days to go in the campaigns, the same old Tory lies and slandering of anyone opposing them continues. Hopefully from Thursday 8th June 2017; their evil ruining of people's lives by their policies which attack the disabled, the elderly, the young, unemployed, homeless, and now even those who die; will come to an end!
